Captain Talcott from the fapt in of the 9,
the effect that the 'hinese passengers had all left the ship
and that information had reached the ship's officers of un
intention to burn the vezeol. Copbain Lloyd had therefore
left the wharf and anchored off the Charoun near the
Briti h unbosts' anchorare.
Captain Walcott went at one to the Commodore with the
Istter to ask pormision to place a puurd on board the
"Patchen". This having been done the vest.l returned to
the wharf.
I returned to the Consulate and learning that placards
had been put up on the wharf and in t. streets leading to
it and that intending pass:ncers were buin prevented from
roing on board, I went with Tr. Turner of the Consulate
to see for myself what was actually happening.
I found that there was a considerablu crowd in the
stroet and mumbers of people had formed groups round the
telegraph poles on hich had b en posted notices on red
